What's left behind the scenes

  • Winona Ryder turned down a role in Herbert Ross's melodrama (1927-2001) 'Steel Magnolias' (1989) for this film, a role that ultimately went to Julia Roberts.
  • Jerry Lee Lewis hated this film, as well as the 1982 autobiographical book by his ex-wife, Myra Lewis, on which the film was based. Lewis's sister, Linda Gale Lewis, also criticized the film, while Murray Silver Jr., co-author of the 1982 book, was simply enraged by it, believing the film's plot deviated significantly from the book and from what actually happened. The film’s director, Jim McBride, stated in turn that he hadn’t even planned for a strict adherence to the facts.
