What is casting?

Casting is an event where candidates are selected to participate in various creative projects, such as films, theatrical productions, advertising campaigns, photo shoots, etc. During casting, organizers look for people who meet certain requirements, such as appearance, acting ability, work experience and other characteristics needed to fulfill the role or task.

What types of castings are there?

Castings can be held in two forms: open and closed.

Open castings are usually open to everyone. This means that any actor who meets certain requirements can come and try their hand at it. Open castings are often used to find new faces or when a large number of participants are required.

Closed castings are held with a limited number of participants, who are usually invited based on their portfolio or recommendations from the database. Closed castings can be more targeted and used to find famous actors for specific roles based on their type.

Casting stages.

1. Submission of applys: Actors send their photographs, videos and resumes for the initial selection.
2. Primary selection: Casting directors review the submitted profiles and select candidates for the second stage.
3. Test Recording: Actors are given a short task from their future role to test their suitability for the future role. To save time, this stage can be combined with submitting applications.
4. Final stage: This is a face-to-face interview with the director and/or casting director.

Each stage of casting requires actors to be professional, prepared and able to show their best qualities. This is a complex process that can be either quick or lengthy, depending on the requirements of the project and the number of candidates.

How are auditions going?

Most castings take place in several stages, and the first stage is the preliminary selection of candidates based on their profiles. To pass the first stage of casting, you need to show your best side, here are some tips on how to do this:

• Before applying, review the casting requirements and make sure you fit the type or role you are looking for.
• Add fresh photos to your profile that will show your appearance and parameters. For successful selection, it is important to have at least a portrait and full-length photo.
• Upload a video card to your profile. You can take it on your phone. The video card will show your facial expressions, articulation, camera work, and voice.
• Indicate your parameters in the form: height, weight, volume, clothing and shoe sizes.
• Don't forget about contacts. Your contact information in the application form will only be available to the casting director to whom you submit your application.
• When submitting an apply, you can write a few words of your own. Do not duplicate your information from the application form; it is better to write why you are suitable for this role.

At the next stage, you may be offered to either do a test yourself and send it online, or they will write down a test for you during an in-person interview, thus combining a test and an interview. Yes, many in-person castings will put you in front of a camera.

Auditions are not always mandatory; as a rule, auditions are done for acting roles with words in films, TV series and commercials. For non-speaking roles and extras, no auditions are asked for and you can be invited directly to the site immediately after consideration of your application.

Payment terms

There is often no payment for participation in castings. However, there are a few exceptions:

• Travel compensation - especially for castings for children, people traveling from another city or with limited mobility
• Payment for fitting - this often takes a lot of time
• Payment for time spent is at the discretion of the organizer

Even if the organizer himself has not indicated a refund for the casting, you, having objective grounds, can ask for it.

Payment terms for creative projects can vary greatly depending on the type of project, its size, and the source of funding. Here are some of the most common conditions:

• A fixed fee is a pre-agreed amount for completing a specific job or project.
• Percentage of profit so-called. 'royalty' is the share of income received from the sale, display or use of a creative product.
• TFP - the work is not paid for by anyone, the organizer and performer use their own available resources to organize and conduct filming, and the results of the work should not be used for commercial purposes.

In some cases, combined methods of remuneration are possible, for example 'fee + royalty' when a one-time payment is made for the artist's work, and an agreement is concluded to receive a percentage of the monetization of the project.

Also, during filming, they are compensated for: overtime (when filming goes on longer than a standard shift), travel, food, accommodation and business trips in cases where filming is on location.
