What's left behind the scenes

  • Barry Levinson was approached to make a documentary about the Chesapeake Bay. The director watched another documentary about the Chesapeake Bay that discussed water pollution and the disappearance of fish. Levinson said the film was excellent, but unlikely to interest anyone. He promised to gather all the facts about the place and 'go a different way'.
  • The film features Cymothoa exigua, a parasitic crustacean also known as the 'tongue-eating louse'. The parasite enters through the gills and attaches to the base of the fish's tongue, then sucks its blood, leading to tongue atrophy. The parasite then replaces the fish's tongue, attaching its own body to the muscles of the tongue stump. Some parasites feed on the fish's blood, but most feed on mucus. This explains why many of the victims in the film are missing their tongues.
