What's left behind the scenes

  • After the film's premiere, Harrison Ford vowed never to work with Sydney Pollack again.
  • The only film in which Harrison Ford appears on screen with an earring (as he does in real life).
  • The plane crash that begins the film looked so realistic that 40 people called emergency services to report the incident.
  • During pre-production, the filmmakers contacted American Airlines requesting information about their rapid response rescue team called the “C.A.R.E. Team.” The airline refused to fulfill the request, not wanting its (in this case, its rescue services) to be associated with a film about a plane crash.
  • The illuminated "Parkway Lanes" sign hadn't been lit for over 20 years and was only repaired for the filming.
  • The film is based on a 1984 novel by Warren Adler (1927-2019), the rights to which were acquired shortly after the book's publication. However, a 15-year pause followed. In 1980, Dustin Hoffman was considered for the lead role, but he soon left the project because he disliked the early script drafts. By 1990, Kevin Costner was cast in the lead, and James L. Brooks was set to direct, though nothing came of it. Eventually, Harrison Ford and Sidney Pollack (1934-2008) became interested in the project as producer and director, respectively, and only then did things start to move forward.
  • Warren Adler's 1984 novel, which served as the literary source for the film, told the story of a plane crash that occurred in January 1982 when a plane crashed into the Potomac River during takeoff from Washington National Airport.
