What's left behind the scenes
- Footage of the birth of a killer whale at the end of the film was shot at the Vancouver Aquarium when a female named Biosa gave birth to a calf named K’yosha. Coincidentally, the calf's father, like Willy in the film, also had a curved fin and could therefore be used in the footage.
- Filming took place from July 31 to October 10, 1996 in Vancouver, Canada and its surroundings.
