What's left behind the scenes

  • For several years, rumors circulated that "Island of Fire" was a product of Jimmy Wang Yu, connected to Taiwanese triads in the past. Jackie Chan had an ill-fitting role as one of the prisoners (as did everyone else in this film). Chan said he only took the role because of Jimmy Wang Yu (who had helped him with triad-related issues in 1980).
  • After the film was fully shot, it was decided not to premiere it first in Taiwan, but in Hong Kong. For this, a shortened version with a runtime of 93 minutes was released, which was shown in Hong Kong cinemas. After the film's relative success, the original version was shown in Taiwan. The American version, 96 minutes long, appeared in the United States only after Chan became popular.
