What's left behind the scenes
- All the deaf characters in the film were played by people who were genuinely deaf.
- The story made such an impression on composer Michael Kamen that he founded a non-governmental organization that purchased musical instruments for students who could not afford them.
- An abandoned fruit canning factory building in Gresham, Oregon, was used as a set. The main characters' residence was also filmed there. The building's exterior was copied from a real building in Portland.
