What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot in California.
  • The initial script version was excessively violent. Producers refused to film half of the scenes and demanded significant changes to the script to avoid a restrictive rating. For example, a scene depicting a naked man hanging upside down being sawed in half was cut.
  • The saw in the film weighed 80 pounds. Its design was developed by Robert Shaye, director of New Line Cinema.
  • Kane Hodder, who played Jason Voorhees in 4 films of the "Friday the 13th" series, was a stunt coordinator on this film.
  • Peter Jackson was among the first candidates considered for the director's position.
  • Originally, Tobe Hooper, the director of the original 1974 film, was supposed to participate in the work on the film, but was unable to due to being occupied on the set of his new film "Spontaneous Combustion" (1990).
  • Near the ranch where the film was shot is the famous Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park with huge roller coasters, and the film's director, Jeff Burr, swears that screams from the ride can be heard in some scenes.
  • Special effects artist Tom Savini, famous for his work on the "Friday the 13th" series, was offered the chance to direct the film.
  • Viggo Mortensen was not the primary candidate for the role of Tex. The auditions were unsuccessful, and the studio hired another actor. However, he was soon fired, and New Line Cinema offered the role back to Mortensen.
  • Tex says the map was first printed in 1973 – the year Tobe Hooper shot the first film in the series.
  • Director Jeff Burr wanted his name removed from the credits, but by that point, the film was already prepared for release.
  • An early version of the script featured a scene where Leatherface's mask was ripped off. The scene was cut to be used in a subsequent installment, but this only happened in the 2003 remake.
