What's left behind the scenes

  • The Olympic rings are missing from the emblem of the Atlanta Olympics. Their use was prohibited by the IOC to protect copyright, as well as in the name of "protecting the use of the famous emblem".
  • In reality, journalist Katie Scraggs (played by Olivia Wilde in the film) suffered from depression and was taking potent medications. She died of an overdose in 2001.
  • The filming of the concert and the explosion took place in the same location where the actual events unfolded in Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Olympic Games. The explosion scene was filmed on the 23rd anniversary of the real explosion. A significant portion of the events were filmed on the same calendar days they actually occurred 23 years ago.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio once considered starring in the film but ultimately served as a producer.
  • One source of material for the film was the book 'The Suspect,' written by Kent Alexander (who at the time was a prosecutor in the state of Georgia) and Kevin (who served as an editor for The Wall Street Journal in Atlanta in the 1990s). Kathy Scruggs never revealed her source, unlike the book's authors, who stated it was FBI agent Don Johnson. He is depicted in the film under the fictional name Tom Shaw.
  • Kathy Bates requested that a concert performance by her favorite artist, Kenny Rogers, be included in the film.
  • Paul Walter Hauser gained 11 kilograms for his role as Richard.
  • The filmmakers were criticized for a scene in which Katy Scruggs offers sexual favors in exchange for information. There was and is no evidence that this actually happened.
  • The scene of the television interview with Richard conducted by Katie Couric after the explosion includes excerpts from the actual interviews Richard gave, though his replies were dubbed with the voice of Paul Walter Hauser.
