What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on Olivia Goldsmith's novel "The First Wives Club" (1992).
- Initially, the role of Brenda was offered to Barbra Streisand, and soon after to Whoopi Goldberg, but both declined, considering the film silly. Goldie Hawn was immediately approved for the role of Alice. Meryl Streep, Sigourney Weaver, and Glenn Close all vied for the part of Diane Keaton. Jennifer Aniston, Christina Applegate, Cameron Diaz, and Sarah Michelle Gellar were considered for the role of Shelly, but Sarah Jessica Parker ultimately landed the part.
- A scene in which Brenda pushes Shelly overboard from Mortan's yacht was removed from the film.
- It was originally intended that the husbands and wives would reunite at the end.
- The film is based on the novel by Olivia Goldsmith, “The First Wives Club” (1992).
