- The role of Weldon was turned down by actors Richard Burton and Lee Marvin before Marlon Brando agreed to play it for $750,000 and ten percent of the profits. Elizabeth Taylor also wanted him for the role, rejecting the initially planned candidate, Patrick O'Neal.
