What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Alex Flinn's novel *Beastly* (2007), which in turn is based on Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s fairy tale *Beauty and the Beast* (La Belle et la Bête, 1757).
  • The rights to Alex Flinn's book were purchased by CBS as early as December 2007, and the film adaptation was planned for release at the end of 2008, but production was halted due to the writers' strike.
  • The film was originally scheduled to premiere in July 2010, but Vanessa Anne Hudgens convinced the distributors to move the premiere forward by six months. The reason was simple – her (now ex-) boyfriend Zac Efron’s film, “Charlie St. Cloud,” was being released at the same time. Vanessa did not want to take fans away from her beloved, so she took drastic measures.
  • Zac Efron was considered for the role of Kyle.
  • Director Daniel Barnz wanted Robert Pattinson to play Kyle, but the actor was forced to decline due to an overly busy filming schedule.
  • For the filming, Neil Patrick Harris wore impermeable contact lenses, which made him practically blind.
