What's left behind the scenes

  • While working on the script, director Christophe Honoré consulted with Louis Garrel about the subject his character would teach. Garrel suggested making him an Italian teacher. Honoré automatically wrote this into the script, assuming Garrel knew Italian, as he was engaged to Italian actress Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi at the time. It was only during filming that it became clear Garrel barely knew any Italian.
  • Christophe Honoré decided to film an adaptation of Madame de Lafayette's (1634-1693) historical novel "The Princess of Clèves" (1678) after the novel was criticized by then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
