What's left behind the scenes

  • Due to the small budget, the film crew and cast had to work 16-20 hours a day for 8 weeks.
  • 22 masks were handmade for Rendel, and 18 of them were broken or damaged during filming.
  • Almost the entire film was shot on location. Studio filming took only one day. A total of 101 locations were used for filming. Decorations had to be created from scratch on 23 sets.
  • It took the decorating team 32 hours to prepare the main character's house for filming. People slept in snatches, no more than 2 hours at a time. Throughout the house, wallpaper had to be stripped, walls repainted, and then all the rooms furnished.
  • Filming for most of the movie took place in the Finnish city of Kajaani. Nearby was once a pulp and paper mill (one of the largest in Europe, with three paper machines). The mill closed in 2008, and now its huge workshops house the offices of various companies.
  • Filming for the movie took 50 days in the autumn of 2015 and spring of 2016. It was organized in the Finnish cities and municipalities of Kajaani, Mikkeli, Varkaus, Sotkamo, Helsinki, Puolanka and Kuopio.
