What's left behind the scenes
- When filming began, Mickey Rooney (1920-2014) started to openly, as they say, "hog the spotlight" (during scenes where other characters were central, he would deliberately fuss with his handkerchief, make faces, etc.), which Spencer Tracy (1900-1967) couldn't stand and threatened to remove him from the film's cast if he didn't stop behaving that way.
- The day after Spencer Tracy received an Oscar for Best Actor for his work in the film, MGM's press service, without his knowledge, publicly announced that Tracy intended to donate the statuette to the wards of Reverend Edward J. Flanagan (1886-1948) in Nebraska. Cornered, Tracy agreed to do so, but only on the condition that he be issued another statuette. A statuette was sent to him. It was engraved with the inscription “Best Actor – Dick Tracy.”
- "Boys Town" actually exists in Douglas County, Nebraska. The town is indeed governed by a “boy,” and the post office and police department employ adults and real police officers.
