What's left behind the scenes
- Principal photography took place from September 4 to October 25, 2012.
- Anna Faris did not appear in the film due to pregnancy. Other actors from previous films in the series (Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, Anthony Anderson) were offered roles in this film, but they declined.
- Ashley Tisdale took ballet lessons specifically for her role in this film.
- This is the only film in the entire franchise not to feature the main characters from previous installments, Anna Faris and Regina Hall.
- Actor Craig Bierko was originally planned for the role of Dan, but was later replaced by Simon Rex.
- This was the longest gap between films in the franchise – almost 7 years.
- Producer David Zucker oversaw additional filming from January to February 2013. Actress Ashley Tisdale revealed in an interview that the material shot during this time comprised approximately 60% of the final version of the film. Director Malcolm D. Lee was not involved in these revisions, as he was already working on 'The Wedding Ringer' (2013) at the time. For unknown reasons, Lee did not even attend the premiere of 'Scary Movie 5' in Los Angeles.
- The film did not have an advance screening for film critics.
- David Zucker and Chris Duffy are avid fans of the Green Bay Packers. Both appeared in cameo roles in a parody scene of "Black Swan" (2010) near the end of the film dressed as fans of the football club.
- Marlon Wayans, who founded the "Scary Movie" franchise with his brothers Keenen Ivory Wayans and Shawn Wayans in 2000, said in an interview that the studio invited them to star in a fifth installment, but they declined. Marlon Wayans also released his own horror parody, "A Haunted House" (2013). The film's box office results were so good that a sequel, "A Haunted House 2" (2014), was decided upon.
- David Zucker said in an interview that the film's release was delayed by three years because the studio was trying to convince him to return as director. They eventually reached an agreement where Zucker would return as a screenwriter. Malcolm D. Lee was then hired as director. Lee had previously worked on "Soul Men" (2008) for the same studio. Before Zucker joined the project as a screenwriter, the initial script was written by Steven Leff, John Aboud, and Michael Colton. Zucker rewrote it first with Lee, and then with his longtime colleague Pat Proft.
- Initially, the film was supposed to parody "Scream 4" (2011), but the studio abandoned this idea when "Scream 4" (2011) performed below expectations at the box office.
- The bear from "Ted" (2012) appears on the film's posters, but is not present in the theatrical version of the film. It can only be seen in the extended version.
- Scenes parodying the film "The Hunger Games" (2012) were removed, but they will be included in the DVD and Blu-ray versions of the film.
- The film features a parody of "Evil Dead" (2013), even though it was released just a week before the premiere of "Scary Movie 5." The producers simply decided to parody its trailer. The film also includes scenes parodying "Fifty Shades of Grey," which wasn't even in production at the time of "Scary Movie 5's" release.
