What's left behind the scenes

  • Film director John Ford (1894-1973) kept Victor McLaglen (1886-1959) in a constant state of tension – by plying him with alcohol, changing the shooting schedule, insulting the actor during and after filming, and shooting scenes after assuring McLaglen it was just a rehearsal. According to eyewitnesses, in one instance, Ford promised the actor a day off, then dragged him to the set early in the morning while he was hungover and ordered him to deliver lines. McLaglen became so enraged that he threatened to quit the production and kill the director.
  • Dudley Nichols (1895-1960) was the first in history to refuse an Academy Award. This was due to a disagreement with the union. According to the film academy's archives, Nichols eventually collected his Oscar by 1949.
