What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is set in 1996.
  • In the scene showing a demo reel, books and video cassettes are visible on the screen, revealing to the audience the sources from which Gaspar Noé drew inspiration while working on the film – the works of filmmakers Luis Buñuel (1900-1983) and Dario Argento, and Romanian philosopher and essayist Emil Cioran (1911-1995), known for his bleak skepticism and disbelief in humanity.
  • Of all the dance scenes in the film, only the first was staged and directed. In all the others, the dancers improvised.
  • The film's screenplay fit onto just 5 pages.
  • According to Sofia Boutella, filming some scenes required 4-hour rehearsals and over 13 takes each.
  • The 12-minute scene at the beginning of the film, shot in one take, was reshot 15 or 16 times.
