What's left behind the scenes
- The nun, played by Susan Sarandon in the film, was told that she would be portrayed on screen by “a famous actress who starred in the drama ‘Thelma & Louise’ (Ridley Scott, 1991),” and when she was introduced to Sarandon, she exclaimed, “Thank God, it’s Louise!”
- The phrase “The dead man walks” is used by guards accompanying a condemned prisoner to his execution.
- In reality, Elmo Patrick Sonnier (1950-1984) and Robert Lee Willie (1958-1984), who served as the prototypes for the character played by Sean Penn, were executed in Louisiana in the electric chair.
- The rape scene involving Peter Sarsgaard and Missy Yager was filmed in the mud, so before each new take, the actors had to get up, shower, re-dress, and re-apply makeup before doing another take. Filming this scene took all night.
