The Freshman

Clark Kellogg arrives in New York to study filmmaking, and before he has settled in, a thief posing as a taxi driver makes off with everything he owns. Tracking the man down leads Clark to Carmine Sabatini, an Italian-American businessman who looks uncannily like a certain movie godfather and who offers the student a well-paid errand job. The work turns out to involve a rare animal, an exclusive gathering of diners and some uncomfortable obligations, while Clark also finds himself drawn to Sabatini's daughter, Tina.

Andrew Bergman wrote and directed the film, his second feature as director after So Fine, with Mike Lobell producing for TriStar Pictures. Marlon Brando plays Sabatini, sending up his own most famous role, and Matthew Broderick takes the title part; Bruno Kirby, Penelope Ann Miller, Frank Whaley and Jon Polito are among the large credited cast of 42, with 58 crew members credited.

The comedy was released in July 1990 and took in about 21 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 23,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from 319 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 53 reviews puts professional assessments noticeably above the audience scores on both sites.
