The film is based on the first books from Cressida Cowell’s "How to Train Your Dragon" series (2003-2012).
There was no warrior girl Astrid in Cressida Cowell's book, but the directors and screenwriters decided that a bright female character was essential. Also, one of the twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut, was made female in the cartoon.
In the cartoon, Stoick says "those blasted creatures won't give up!", "lead us home, devil!", "the abysses of hell will open up!". These concepts did not exist among pagan Vikings; they only appeared with the advent of Christianity.
