Steve Everett is a newspaper reporter whose drinking, womanizing and neglected family life have left his career in ruins. Assigned to profile a death row inmate at San Quentin shortly before the scheduled execution, he begins looking into the case himself and comes to believe the condemned man, Frank Beechum, did not commit the murder. With the execution set for just after midnight, Everett has only hours to find evidence that could stop it.
