Short description
Libby Parsons appears to have a happy life with her husband Nick and their young son, until a sailing trip ends with Nick missing and blood on the boat. Libby is charged with his murder and sent to prison, where she comes to believe Nick is still alive and that she was framed. While serving her sentence she loses contact with her son, who has been left in the care of a friend. After her release, her parole officer, Travis Lehman, keeps close watch over her, but Libby sets out to find her child and to prove what really happened, with Travis drawn into her pursuit as he clashes with his own superiors.
Double Jeopardy was released in 1999 and directed by Bruce Beresford, the thirteenth of the twenty films he has directed, following Paradise Road and preceding Evelyn. David Weisberg and Douglas S. Cook wrote the screenplay, Leonard Goldberg produced, and Tommy Lee Jones and Ashley Judd lead a credited cast of 77, with Bruce Greenwood as Nick and Benjamin Weir as the young Matty. Against a budget of 70 million US dollars, the film took about 178 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 104,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller 1,555 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 4.7 out of 10 from 87 reviews. Audiences have rated it considerably more favourably than critics did.

- Ashley Judd plays the lead role, but Tommy Lee Jones's name is listed first in the credits.
- Meg Ryan and Brooke Shields turned down the role of Libby, resulting in Jodie Foster being cast, but she became pregnant and the role went to Ashley Judd.

- The U.S. Constitution does indeed prohibit trying a person for the same crime more than once; however, the fact that a person was convicted of a crime they did not commit does not give them the right to then go and commit that crime. Furthermore, the heroine could have been tried not only for intentional murder, but also for concealed carry, stalking, and manslaughter.
