What's left behind the scenes

  • All the viruses launched in the final "battle" of hackers also have historical origins. Among them are Cookie Monster and Elk Cloner.
  • The virus launched by the main character, Dade Murphy, which caused the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange, is a reference to a real event in 1988 when the famous Morris worm shut down the ARPANET network.
  • In one episode, the FBI agent quotes "The Hacker Manifesto," which is a real statement by a hacker using the pseudonym The Mentor, published on June 6, 1986, in the semi-legal hacker magazine Phrack. The manifesto heard in the film is not the original text; it was taken from a later issue of the hacker magazine 2600.
  • Ironically, the film's official website was hacked by unknown hackers, and the original version of the site was lost.
  • The supercomputer 'Gibson' is likely a reference to William Gibson, the 'father' of cyberpunk.
  • Emmanuel Goldstein is the real nickname of the editor-in-chief of the semi-legal magazine '2600'.
  • Emmanuel Goldstein's surname is taken from George Orwell's work '1984'. A reference to this novel also appears in Phantom Phreak's dream, where agent Richard Jill says, 'I’m watching you'.
  • Three soundtracks were released for the film. The first album featured music heard in the film, while the two subsequent ones were remixes of music written 'based on' the film.
  • Paul Cook's hacker nickname, 'Lord Nikon', is a reference to the camera manufacturer Nikon. The name is fitting for the character, as he has a phenomenal (or photographic) memory.
  • The surname of Emmanuel Goldstein is taken from George Orwell's novel '1984'. A reference to this novel is also present in Phantom Phreak's dream, where Agent Richard Jill says, "I’m watching you."
