Short description

A political activist is convinced that her guest is a man who once tortured her for the government.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's title alludes to Franz Schubert's quartet "Death and the Maiden".
  • According to Sigourney Weaver, director Roman Polanski would occasionally and unexpectedly fire a gun to capture genuine expressions of fear on the actors' faces.
  • Roman Polanski dreamed of casting Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston in the leading roles.
  • With the exception of the very first scene, which takes place at dawn, the film was shot in chronological order. Director Roman Polanski decided to shoot this scene at sunset, stating that the lighting was better at that time of day, so it was filmed in reverse (the last scene, where the sun rises, was filmed first, when the sun was actually setting, and so on).
