Short description
Paulina Escobar is married to Gerardo, a lawyer in a South American country that has recently emerged from dictatorship. When a storm strands a stranger at their home, Gerardo brings him back as a guest. Paulina becomes convinced that the man, Dr. Roberto Miranda, is the doctor who tortured and raped her years earlier while she was blindfolded and held prisoner. Her certainty rests on details she recognises: his voice, his smell, his turns of phrase, his taste in music. Rather than let him leave, she takes him captive and forces a reckoning, with her husband pressed into an uncomfortable role in the confrontation, caught between his wife's accusation and the man's denials.
Roman Polanski directed the film, the thirteenth of the twenty-three features listed in his filmography, following Bitter Moon and preceding The Ninth Gate. The screenplay was written by Rafael Yglesias and Ariel Dorfman, adapting Dorfman's play. Sigourney Weaver plays Paulina, Ben Kingsley plays Dr. Miranda, and Stuart Wilson plays Gerardo, with Krystia Mova and Jonathan Vega and Rodolphe Vega in supporting parts.
Made for about 12 million dollars, the film took roughly 8 million worldwide. It holds a 7.1 rating on TMDB from 581 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7 out of 10 from 51 reviews, close to the audience figure.
