Leo

Leo is a 74-year-old lizard who has spent decades in a terrarium in a Florida classroom, sharing it with Squirtle, his turtle companion. When Leo learns he has only a year left to live, he decides to break out and see life beyond the glass. His plan is complicated by the students who have come to rely on him and by a strict substitute teacher who takes an interest in what is happening inside the terrarium. The animation is a musical comedy about a class of children facing their final year of elementary school.

Adam Sandler voices Leo and co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Smigel and Paul Sado; Sandler also produced through Happy Madison Productions alongside Mireille Soria, with Animal Logic. The film is directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel and David Wachtenheim. For Smigel it follows The Week Of (2018); for Marianetti and Wachtenheim it follows My Depression (The Up and Down and Up of It) (2014). The voice cast includes Bill Burr as Squirtle, Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, Rob Schneider and Allison Strong, among 75 credited cast members and 69 credited crew.

Released in November 2023 and running 102 minutes, the film sits comfortably with audiences, holding a 7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 46,000 votes and a 7.3 out of 10 on TMDB. Critics were somewhat cooler, giving it 6.7 out of 10 across 76 reviews, so viewers have responded a little more warmly than reviewers did.
