What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot in color, but was 'converted' to black and white using special technologies. Due to a laboratory error, at least one copy of the film was released with the first reel remaining in color.
  • In the music studio episode, the pianist, played by Adam Alexi-Malle, performs the beginning of Franz Liszt's (1811-1886) Piano Concerto No. 1. Prior to this, the Coen brothers were unaware that Alexi-Malle was an accomplished pianist.
  • The film's title is taken from the poem "Antigone" (1899) by American educator and poet William Hughes Mearns (1875-1965).
  • Joel and Ethan Coen conceived the plot of this film while shooting "The Hudsucker Proxy" (1994). While filming a scene in a barbershop, the Coens spotted one of the props – a 1940s haircut advertisement poster – and began to devise a story about a barber.
  • Billy Bob Thornton trusted the Coens so much that he agreed to appear in the film without even reading the script.
  • The film was shot in color, but was "translated" into black and white using special technologies. Due to a laboratory error, at least one copy of the film was released with the first reel remaining in color.
  • The film's title comes from the poem "Antigonish" (1899) by American educator and poet William Hughes Mearns (1875-1965).
