What's left behind the scenes

  • According to director and screenwriter Byron Howard, in one episode during the festival, 50,000 animals appeared on screen simultaneously, setting an absolute record in the history of Disney animated films.
  • Robert Irwin the koala is named after Robert Clarence Irwin, the Australian conservationist and son of the famous naturalist Steve Irwin (1962–2006), who provided the voice for the character.
  • The goat police officers are named Boucheron and Chèvre, voiced by Jean Reno. "Boucheron" is a French semi-soft cheese made from pasteurized goat's milk, and "Chèvre" translates from French as "goat."
  • A character voiced by Alan Tudyk sells bootleg DVDs, one of which features a 'wild' version of the adventure film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Steven Spielberg, 1984), in which Short Round was played by Ke Huy Quan, who voices one of the characters here.
  • Tom Lister Jr. (who voiced Finnick in the first film of the franchise released in 2016) passed away in December 2020, before work on the sequel began. Instead of hiring another actor for the voice, they used the only two lines of this character from the first film, as well as unused recordings of Lister Jr.
  • According to producer Yvette Merino, they once considered making a kangaroo or a giraffe the new mayor of Zootopia, but they abandoned the idea, and the mayor remained a stallion.
  • In the festival episode, a zebra and a wolf can be seen on screen dressed as Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars franchise.
  • When two hippo police officers end up at the docks, they are shown eating apples rolling toward them. This is a reference to the board game Hungry Hungry Hippos, in which hippos eat multicolored marbles.
  • The gazelle, voiced by Shakira, performs a wrestling move (a jumping elbow drop) on the zebras (voiced by Roman Reigns and Phil Brooks); Reigns and Brooks are professional wrestlers.
  • The stallion mayor counts down by stomping his hoof. This is a reference to Clever Hans, a real horse from the early 20th century who answered arithmetic questions by stomping his hoof (though it is believed he was simply trained to do so).
  • One of the scenes was intended to feature manatees, capybaras, and platypuses, but these shots were cut during editing, which the filmmakers later regretted.
  • The appearance of the character voiced by Ke Huy Quan borrowed certain features from the snakes in the animated films 'The Jungle Book' (Wolfgang Reitherman, 1967), 'Robin Hood' (Wolfgang Reitherman and David Hand, 1973), and 'The Princess and the Frog' (Ron Clements and John Musker, 2009).
  • One of the supporting characters was voiced by Bob Iger, the president and chairman of the board of The Walt Disney Company.
  • Pigs (referring to feral pigs descended from domestic ones) were planned to appear as early as the first film of the franchise (2016), when Nick (voiced by Jason Bateman) was intended to be the main character; however, this idea was abandoned when it was decided to shift the focus to Judy, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin.
  • For some time, the filmmakers planned to feature chameleons on screen (cast as something like secret agents), but they later abandoned this idea and instead showed a single basilisk lizard voiced by Danny Trejo.
  • At one point, there were plans to show crocodiles on screen, but ultimately everything related to crocodiles that remained in the film was reduced to an illustration in a book and a picture on one of the musicians' t-shirts.
  • The cell of the character voiced by Jenny Slate is different from the others—instead of traditional bars, it has a transparent plastic wall with holes. This is a reference to Hannibal Lecter's cell, played by Anthony Hopkins in Jonathan Demme's thriller 'The Silence of the Lambs' (1990). Originally, a four-minute scene—a direct reference to Demme's film—was intended for the movie, but it was cut because it contrasted too sharply with the light atmosphere of 'Zootopia 2'.
  • Initially, the relationship between the characters voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin and Andy Samberg was intended to be romantic before the latter's true nature was revealed. However, during editing, many scenes, including this one, were cut.
  • In early drafts of the script, the character voiced by Andy Samberg was written as an outright sadist and sociopath who enjoyed torturing the main character, voiced by Jason Bateman.
  • Initially, it was planned to portray the reptiles as animals unknown in Zootopia, and their meeting with the character voiced by Ke Huy Quan was to be framed as a first contact with aliens. In the end, only a few details of this concept remained.
  • The chase in the snowy maze at the end of the film is a reference to a similar scene in the horror movie 'The Shining' (Stanley Kubrick, 1980).
