Maximum Risk
Short description
A French police officer named Alain Moreau discovers that a man killed in a shootout is his identical twin, a brother he never knew existed. The dead man, Mikhail Suverov, had been living in New York and working for the Russian mafia. Alain travels there and assumes his brother's identity to learn how he lived and why he died, which draws him into a conflict involving organized crime and federal agents alike. Natasha Henstridge plays Alex Minetti, Mikhail's girlfriend, while Jean-Hugues Anglade and Zach Grenier appear among the supporting cast.
The film was directed by Ringo Lam, the Hong Kong filmmaker behind Prison on Fire and City on Fire. Maximum Risk, released in 1996, was the seventh of his directed features and came after Twin Dragons and Full Contact. Larry Ferguson wrote the screenplay, and Moshe Diamant produced. Jean-Claude Van Damme plays both brothers, the same year he took the lead in two roles for Lam's Twin Dragons.
Made for about 25 million dollars, the film took in roughly twice that amount worldwide, a solid return for a mid-budget action picture. Audience scores sit close to the middle of the scale, with IMDb showing 5.6 from around 26,000 votes and TMDB 5.8 from a much smaller pool. A critics' rating of 4.7 from 37 reviews places it below both audience measures.

- Filming took place in France, Canada, and the United States from January 18 to April 8, 1996.
- The scene in the subway was filmed in New York and Philadelphia. The scene of the foot chase through the streets and down the stairs to the subway was filmed in Brooklyn, New York, while the scenes on the subway platform were filmed in Philadelphia.
- Initially, the film was to be titled "Exchange," but the film company decided that the public wouldn't understand all the nuances and gave the film the title "Bloodstone," as more suitable for a film in the "action" genre. For some time, the film was advertised under that title, but it was ultimately decided that the title lacked something characteristic of films starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and the title was changed to "Maximum Risk."
