College student Lewis Thomas sets out to drive Venna, a friend he is interested in, home for the summer holidays. His plans change when he has to collect his older brother Fuller, recently released from prison. On the road, Fuller passes the time with a CB radio in the car and persuades Lewis to join in a prank: posing as a woman, they arrange a meeting with a trucker at a roadside motel, then give him the number of a neighbouring room rather than their own. The man they have been talking to responds with violence, and the brothers and Venna find themselves pursued across the country by a killer they cannot identify.
John Dahl directed the film, his sixth feature, following Rounders. J.J. Abrams and Clay Tarver wrote the screenplay, with Abrams producing alongside Chris Moore for Bad Robot and Regency Enterprises. Steve Zahn plays Fuller, Paul Walker plays Lewis, and Leelee Sobieski plays Venna.
Made for around 23 million dollars, the film took about 37 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 82,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.5 from a much smaller base of about 1,400. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 116 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
