What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award at the first ceremony in 1980. John Adams was nominated for and won the award for 'Worst Supporting Actor.' His competitor for the Golden Raspberry in this category was Laurence Olivier (1907-19989) for 'The Jazz Singer.'
  • Around 350 boys auditioned for the role of Phil Dunne.
  • The film was shot in New York.
  • The child selection process was quite rigorous. Director John Cassavetes (1929-1989) conducted it in a New York discotheque, which was packed with hundreds of parents and children. Many of them complained about the cramped and stuffy waiting conditions, but Cassavetes deliberately held the casting there to find a child who would be able to endure, regardless of the difficulties.
  • The debut role of John Adams, better known as Juan Adams.
  • John Cassavetes hired real gangsters and criminals to film the scene in Tony Tanzini's apartment, played by Basilio Franchina, and asked for their opinion on the realism of the scene. One of the criminals argued with the director about how everything should have happened.
