The film is based on Philip Roth's novel "The Human Stain" (2000).
A mole on Coleman Silk's (played by Anthony Hopkins) head was added because Wentworth Miller, who played Miller in his youth, has a mole in that spot. In addition, Hopkins wore contact lenses the color of Miller's eyes.
While preparing for the role, Nicole Kidman visited shelters for women who had been victims of abuse.
