Short description

Set up by their boss to be knocked off following a final heist, soon-to-retire crooks Brian Hope and Charlie McManus get wind of their impending demise and run off with the spoils of their crime. Fleeing their boss, the drug dealers they robbed, the police, and Brian's angry girlfriend, the duo take refuge in a training convent for nuns. In disguise, they convince Sister Superior that they're nuns, a charade they're forced to maintain as their enemies arrive.

What's left behind the scenes

  • An alternative ending was originally filmed in which the characters played by Eric Idle, Robbie Coltrane, and Camilla Coduri escape to Brazil. The DVD release of the film includes several photographs taken during the filming of this ending.
  • The British gangster, played by Robert Patterson, is watching John Mackenzie's detective drama 'Long Good Friday' (1979).
  • Director and screenwriter Jonathan Lynn and actor Eric Idle, who played Brian Hope, studied together and started their careers together. At some point, their paths diverged, but they reunited for this film after Lynn directed Idle's play 'Pass the Butler' for the theater.
  • A scene featuring the characters played by Eric Idle and Camilla Coduri in a park was also filmed (but cut during editing). Several photographs taken during the filming of this scene can be found on the film's DVD release.
  • The film was produced by Handmade Films, an independent film company founded in 1979.
  • Director and screenwriter Jonathan Lynn wanted to film the movie in the tradition of the Ealing Studios comedies of the 1950s.
  • The role of Charlie McManus was offered to Michael Palin, but he declined due to other commitments, and the part went to Robbie Coltrane.
