Girlfriends centres on Susan Weinblatt, a young photographer in New York who scrapes by shooting weddings and bar mitzvahs while hoping to make a living from her own art. She shares an apartment with her closest friend, Anne, but when Anne marries and moves out, Susan is left on her own, hurt by the change and forced to work out how to build a life by herself. The film follows her attempts to find steady work, new relationships and some sense of direction now that the friendship at the centre of her daily life has shifted.
Claudia Weill directed and produced the film from a screenplay by Vicki Polon. It was her first feature, arriving well before Critical Choices, her next credited directing work. Melanie Mayron leads the cast as Susan, with Anita Skinner as Anne, Eli Wallach as Rabbi Gold, Adam Cohen as the bar mitzvah boy, Jean De Baer as Terry and Christopher Guest as Eric, among 24 credited performers.
Made in the United States and released in August 1978, the film runs 88 minutes and mixes comedy with drama. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from around 3,600 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller pool of 88 ratings, indicating a modest but durable reputation.
