What's left behind the scenes

  • When the Griswolds are photographed near the fountain in Paris, Ellen is holding a Parisian promotional brochure. The colors of the flag on it are green, white, and orange (these are the colors of the Irish national flag).
  • Anthony Michael Hall declined to reprise his role as Rusty in a sequel to Harold Ramis's 1983 film, and a decision was made to recast both child roles. This is why Dana Barron wasn't even considered for the role of Ellen in Amy Heckerling's 1985 film.
  • Rick Mayall was considered for the role of the motorcyclist, as both Chevy Chase and director Amy Heckerling were fans of the series "Growing Pains" (1982-1984), but his candidacy was rejected by Warner Bros., who decided he wasn't well-known enough to American audiences. John Cleese was also considered for the role.
  • Director Amy Heckerling once stated that she disliked Chevy Chase so much that she wouldn’t set foot on set unless she was provided with a plane ticket to New York, so she could leave at any moment.
  • According to the director, the most difficult scene to film was the conclusion of the car chase involving the car thief and the main character played by Chevy Chase.
