The film features a villa on the shores of Lake Como. The lake itself is not shown in the film, as the plot takes place in Rome.
Barnaba Cicchini, played by Adriano Celentano, lives in the same building where the action of Camillo Mastrocinque's comedy 'Honest Gang' (1956) unfolded.
The royal family in the film is based on the princely family of Monaco. King Gustav, played by Adolfo Celi, bears a striking resemblance to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, his wife Betsy (played by Milly Sanoner) is American, just like Grace Kelly (the actress who became Rainier III's wife), and their daughter Christina (played by Ornella Muti) is based on Princess Caroline. The fictional principality of San Tulip is based on Monaco – even the details are similar, for example, the presence of a casino.
