Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party is a documentary about the Australian post-punk band The Birthday Party, told largely through the words of the people who were there. Formed in a Melbourne suburb, the group grew into one of the most confrontational acts of its era, driven by Nick Cave's voice and Rowland S. Howard's guitar work, and later based in London and Berlin. The film traces their rise and their eventual break-up, touching on creativity, addiction, fame and the tensions within the band, and drawing on archival footage, artwork, music, studio material and animation as well as interviews with Cave, Mick Harvey, Phill Calvert, Tracy Pew and others, including archive appearances by the broadcaster John Peel.
The film is directed by Ian White, who also produces alongside Bill Lord and Mick Harvey. It is his second feature, following Thin Ice in 2000, and it marked his return to directing after a long gap.
Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party runs 99 minutes and was released in October 2023. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 out of 10 from 449 votes, suggesting a modest but appreciative audience rather than a wide one.
