Remembering that a stuntman died during the filming of the original movie while launching a specially built model of the "Phoenix", the new version of the scene with the flying plane was filmed using a radio-controlled model and computer graphics.
The character of Miranda Otto did not exist in the original film.

The airplane model used in the crash scene cost $250,000. It was so perfect that it flew further than the film crew expected. The model flew so far that it crashed into a camera and broke the operator's leg.
