The Rainmaker follows Rudy Baylor, a newly qualified lawyer in Memphis who struggles to find work and ends up with a dubious firm run by a shady operator. Assigned to a more experienced, streetwise colleague, he takes on a case for a couple whose son is seriously ill: a bone marrow transplant could help him, but their insurer refuses to pay. That claim grows into a courtroom fight against a wealthy and well-connected insurance company.
Francis Ford Coppola directed the film, his twentieth in a career that includes twenty-six directing credits overall, arriving between Jack and Supernova. He wrote the screenplay with Michael Herr, working from John Grisham's novel, and the producers were Steven Reuther, Fred Fuchs and Michael Douglas. Matt Damon plays Rudy, with Claire Danes as Kelly Riker, Danny DeVito as Deck Shifflet, Jon Voight as opposing lawyer Leo F. Drummond, Mary Kay Place as Dot Black and Dean Stockwell as Judge Harvey Hale. The credited cast runs to twenty-seven names and the crew to 101.
Made for about 40 million US dollars, the film took roughly 46 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 90,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from about 1,500 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 60 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
