What's left behind the scenes

  • In the original script, Vanessa's role was significantly more modest, but director John Ottman liked the character and the actress playing her (Eva Mendes) so much that he substantially expanded the role.
  • The university campus in the film lacked a bell tower, so a mock bell tower over 45 meters high was constructed for filming (its construction cost approximately $150,000). The interior decorations of the bell tower were built in a separate pavilion, and the bell itself was made of papier-mâché.
  • The film's opening scene was originally intended to take place on a yacht, but the filmmakers came across airplane cabin sets and decided to change the script. It later became known that the originally envisioned yacht scene was inspired by the airplane scene from the 1983 horror film “Twilight Zone: The Movie” (John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, George Miller).
  • The ice in the bathtub in the scene of Lisa’s death, played by Jacinda Barrett, was made of silicone, and therefore quite heavy. A goat kidney served as the kidney in the same scene.
  • The scene with Lisa (played by Jacinda Barrett), Trevor (Matthew Davis), and Toby (played by Anson Mount) in the bar shortly before the girl's death was filmed several months after the end of the shooting period. It was decided that the death scene should be included in the film at an earlier stage to heighten the audience's sense of danger. This is why this character is never mentioned in the film – neither before her disappearance nor after. Mount had to wear a wig because he had gotten a haircut.
