A teenage boy stands accused of killing his father, and if convicted he faces the electric chair. Twelve jurors retire to decide his fate, and at the first vote eleven of them are ready to convict. A single holdout refuses to go along, not because he believes the boy innocent but because he thinks the case deserves discussion before a life is ended.
The jurors come from different backgrounds and bring their own assumptions and prejudices into the room, which turns the deliberation into a long and heated argument on a sweltering day. Through persistence and careful reasoning, the dissenting juror forces the others to reexamine the testimony and evidence, and the unanimous verdict the court requires proves difficult to reach.
William Friedkin directed this television adaptation of Reginald Rose's play, which Rose himself adapted for the screen. It is the eleventh of the sixteen films Friedkin directed, following Jade and preceding Rules of Engagement. The cast includes Courtney B. Vance, Ossie Davis, George C. Scott, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Dorian Harewood and James Gandolfini. Made on a budget of about two million dollars, it matched that figure in worldwide box office. Reception was solid across audiences, with a 7.8 rating on IMDb from roughly twenty-one thousand votes and 7.7 on TMDB, while critics gave it 7.2 from fifteen reviews.
