Inside Deep Throat examines the phenomenon surrounding the 1972 pornographic film Deep Throat, which was made cheaply in a Florida hotel and went on to become one of the most profitable independent releases ever. The documentary looks at how a low-budget production became a cultural flashpoint, drawing both fervent opposition from morality campaigners and support from those who saw new artistic possibilities for sexuality on screen. It also covers the darker side of the story, including the involvement of organized crime in the film's distribution and the troubles that followed its star, Linda Lovelace.
Directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, who also wrote the screenplay, the film was their second feature together after Party Monster in 2003. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are among the producers, and Dennis Hopper narrates. The large credited cast includes participants and observers such as Peter Bart, Carl Bernstein, Norman Mailer and John Waters, alongside archive footage of figures like Warren Beatty.
Released in 2005, the documentary runs 90 minutes. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 121 reviews, while on TMDB its audience score is 6.4 out of 10 from 148 votes, a gap suggesting professional reviewers responded more warmly than general viewers. It was made for about 2 million dollars.
