Set during the First World War, Deathwatch follows a small group of British soldiers who become separated from their regiment during a battle and lose their way in thick fog. Led by the young Private Charlie Shakespeare, they stumble upon a German trench that appears largely abandoned. After overcoming the few dazed soldiers still there and taking one prisoner, the group decides to hold the position and wait for reinforcements, since their company has been given up for dead. The captured German warns them that the place is cursed, and the trenches conceal an extensive network of tunnels. Corpses of German soldiers who seemingly killed one another are found, and as strange events mount, the men begin to turn on each other.
The film was released in 2002 and was written and directed by M.J. Bassett, marking the first feature in a directing career that continued with Solomon Kane, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, Inside Man: Most Wanted, Rogue, Endangered Species and Red Sonja. Jamie Bell leads as Charlie Shakespeare, alongside Rúaidhrí Conroy, Laurence Fox, Dean Lennox Kelly, Roman Horák and producer Mike Downey in a supporting role.
Deathwatch was a German-British co-production and took about 2 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.7/10 from 233 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 4.6/10 from 8 reviews, so audiences rated it somewhat more favourably than critics did.
