What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on interviews conducted by screenwriter/director Ian Softley with Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann (Astrid’s friend who introduced her to The Beatles) in the spring of 1988, as well as later interviews with them by screenwriter Steven Ward, who joined the film project when Softley’s initial script failed to attract potential investors.
  • The film’s soundtrack does not include any songs written by members of The Beatles, but it does include songs by many other artists that The Beatles performed during their Hamburg shows.
  • The original recording of “My Bonnie,” performed by Tony Sheridan with The Beatles as the backing band, is the only authentic Beatles recording in the film’s entire soundtrack.
  • Ian Hart had already played Lennon in the film "Time and Again" in 1991. Bayquell later played the role of McCartney in the television film "Linda McCartney's Story." Williams once again played the role of Pete Best in the TV film "The John Lennon Story."
  • In the film, Stephen Dorff, as Sutcliffe, plays a "Hofner President" bass guitar with chrome double pickups. In reality, Sutcliffe played the same bass guitar, but with single-coil pickups covered in plastic resembling wood.
  • Ian Hart was approved for the role a year before filming began – because director Iain Softley had already seen him in the role of John Lennon in the film "Time and Again."
  • Frida Kelly, who played the episodic role of George Harrison's mother in the film, was the secretary of the Beatles' Fan Club in Liverpool in its earliest years. She is even mentioned in The Beatles' 1963 Christmas message to fans, in a phrase spoken by George.
  • Some of Sutcliffe's drawings and paintings in the film are reproductions of Stuart Sutcliffe's actual drawings and paintings.
  • Stephen Dorff was the only actor involved in the film who could actually play his musical instrument (in real life, Dorff is also a professional musician). Ironically, his character Stuart Sutcliffe's very limited playing ability was one of the main arguments later cited by McCartney as to why Paul insisted Sutcliffe leave the band.
  • The recording studio scene features the very version of the song My Bonnie recorded in a Hamburg studio with Tony Sheridan and The Beatles as his accompanying band.
  • Filming lasted six weeks – in Liverpool in March 1993 and in Hamburg and London in the spring of 1993.
  • The original recording of the song 'My Bonnie', performed by Tony Sheridan with The Beatles as the backing band, is the only genuine recording by The Beatles from the entire film soundtrack.
  • Ian Hart had previously played Lennon in the 1991 film 'Times and Times'. Bayquell later played the role of McCartney in the television film 'Linda McCartney's Story'. Williams once again played the role of Pete Best in the TV film 'John Lennon's Story'.
  • In the film, Stephen Dorff, as Sutcliffe, plays a 'Hofner President' bass guitar with chrome double pickups. In reality, Sutcliffe played the same bass guitar, but with single-coil pickups covered in wood-effect plastic.
  • Ian Hart was cast in the role a year before filming began – because director Iain Softley had already seen him in the role of John Lennon in 'Times and Times'.
