Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band is a documentary about how Bruce Springsteen and his longtime band prepare their live shows. Built around footage shot during rehearsals and in the hours around performances, it follows the group as they work songs into shape and settle on the shape of a concert. Springsteen himself speaks about the process, and members of the band appear alongside him, including Patti Scialfa, Roy Bittan, Nils Lofgren, Garry Tallent and Steven Van Zandt, all credited as themselves. The film also draws on archival material. What holds it together is the gap between private preparation and the public show: the repetition, the adjustments and the waiting that precede a performance.

The director is Thom Zimny, who has made several music documentaries, among them The Ties That Bind: The Making of The River (2015), Sly (2023) and The Beach Boys (2024). Road Diary followed The Beach Boys the same year and came before Bruce Springsteen: Nebraska Live (2025). Springsteen wrote the screenplay and produced with Zimny and Jon Landau. The film runs 99 minutes and was released in September 2024.
