Moonwalker is a 1988 American fantasy and music film built around Michael Jackson, who plays a version of himself. The story moves through a series of musical segments before settling into an adventure in which three children, Sean, Katie and Zeke, are pursued by the criminal Mr. Big, who wants to control the world by getting schoolchildren hooked on drugs. Jackson intervenes on the children's behalf, changing shape as the conflict unfolds. The film draws heavily on Jackson's music, including songs from his Bad album and concert footage, and mixes live performance with fantasy sequences and effects.
The film was directed by Will Vinton, Colin Chilvers, Jerry Kramer and Jim Blashfield, following Vinton's earlier feature The Adventures of Mark Twain. David Newman wrote the screenplay, and the producers included Dennis E. Jones, Will Vinton and Jerry Kramer. Alongside Jackson, the cast features Joe Pesci as Mr. Big, Sean Lennon as Sean, Kelley Parker as Katie, Brandon Quintin Adams as Zeke and Ben Aaron as Maestro. It runs 93 minutes and was made for a budget of 22 million dollars.
Released in October 1988, Moonwalker took about 67 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. Audience responses are moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 18,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 out of 10 from a much smaller group of voters.
