Janis Ian: Breaking Silence

This documentary explores the life and career of New Jersey singer-songwriter Janis Ian. It focuses on the aftermath of her 1966 release, Society’s Child, a song about interracial romance that brought her fame but also triggered severe backlash and death threats. The film follows her journey through a subsequent emotional crisis and her eventual return to success with the song At Seventeen. It details her sixty-year career, including ten Grammy nominations across eight categories and the recording of her song Stars by artists like Cher and Nina Simone, while documenting her struggles with misogyny, homophobia, and a serious illness.

Directed by Varda Bar-Kar, who also served as a producer and co-writer alongside Pierre Hauser, the film was produced by Greenwich Entertainment. It features appearances by Janis Ian and other figures including Joan Baez, Jean Smart, Laurie Metcalf, Lily Tomlin, and Arlo Guthrie. The movie was released on March 28, 2025.
