Short description
A small, turbulent town in Texas obsesses over their high school football team to an unhealthy degree. When the star tailback, Boobie Miles, is seriously injured during the first game of the season, all hope is lost, and the town's dormant social problems begin to flare up. It is left to the inspiring abilities of new coach Gary Gaines to instill in the other team members -- and, by proxy, the town itself -- a sense of self-respect and honor.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the book (1990) "Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, a Dream" by journalist H.G. Bissinger, which contained certain elements of racism and intolerance. The filmmakers contacted the authorities of Odessa, Texas, for permission to film at the high school described in the book. They granted permission, but on the condition that the film contain no hint of racism, so as not to tarnish the image of the school and the city.
  • Garrett Hedlund gained 9 kilograms for the filming, in addition to the almost 14 kilograms he had gained for Wolfgang Petersen’s "Troy" (2004). He previously weighed just over 60 kilograms, and ended up weighing around 90 kilograms.
  • In reality, in 1988 the team lost the state semi-final, not the final.
