- According to director and screenwriter Savage Steve Holland, the film is largely autobiographical. He genuinely considered suicide when his girlfriend left him for the captain of the ski team. He really did know a newspaper boy named Johnny Gasperini who tormented him. According to Holland, when the film was released, his ex-girlfriend called him to apologize.
