This adventure film follows a sailor who is stranded on an island after a shipwreck. Accompanied only by a dog and a cat, he gathers supplies from the wreckage and builds a shelter after failing to signal a passing ship. The story depicts his time on the island, including his encounter with natives, the rescue of Friday, and his eventual return to Southampton following a mutiny on a ship.
Directed, produced, and written by Georges Méliès, who also stars as the title character, this French production was the first cinematic adaptation of the story. It is the 10th of 14 films directed by Méliès in chronological order, released in 1902 after A Trip to the Moon and before Gulliver's Travels Among the Lilliputians and the Giants. Though originally filmed in black and white, Méliès hand-painted the frames to add color. While the original version lasted 15 minutes, a restored version consisting of twelve and a half minutes of the painted footage has been recovered.
The film holds a rating of 5.7/10 on IMDb based on 554 votes and a matching 5.7/10 on TMDB from 25 votes.
